The Imo
State government has resumed work on the Sam Mbakwe road project that
was abandoned by J-PROS, a Lebanese construction company, following its
problems with the former deputy governor, Sir. Jude Agbaso.
The dual carriage road project would be under the close supervision of the state’s Ministry of Works.
Governor Rochas Okorocha, who spoke
Wednesday when he inspected the road project, also recalled the furore
raised by the stoppage and abandonment of the project after the
commitment of about N1.2 billion by the state government.
He regretted the incident which he
said consumed the former deputy governor, Sir Jude Agbaso. It would be
recalled that the state legislature found the former deputy governor
guilty of collecting N458 million gratification from Mr. Joseph Dina,
the managing director of the company in charge of the project.
Mr. Dina had accused the former deputy
governor of demanding and collecting the said amount with the promise
of giving him more jobs, a development he claimed crippled the company
financially and made continuation of the project impossible.
Okorocha reiterated the commitment of
his administration to actualize the project irrespective of the
unfortunate circumstance that led to the stoppage of work. He also
disclosed decision of the state executive council to confiscate
equipment abandoned at the site by J-PROS, while directing the state
Attorney-General to take every necessary legal action to ensure that
government recovers the unmerited sum paid to the company.
