Loyalists of former president OlusegunObasanjo are now the brides of the leaders of the emerging All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-west geo-political zones.
Apparently worried by the rising profile of the APC in the zone, the PDP at both the national and zonal levels has intensified efforts to make its current reconciliation work in the South-west zone.
A prominent member of the Obasanjo camp told LEADERSHIP Sunday that leaders of the APC had been making overtures to them to join the new platform.
The source, who was a member of the recently dissolved PDP zonal executive committee, said those courting the Obasanjo’s followers were principally leaders of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), especially in Ekiti State.
“I have been approached on many occasions by members of the ACN to join their party, they have used several methods and personalities to get to me but I am yet to make up my mind on the issue,” the source who pleaded anonymity, said.
Sources in the know believe that the renewed poaching efforts might not be unconnected with the seeming war of attrition in the PDP, which the leadership of the new party using the ACN platform hopes to cash in.
It is not clear if they (the people making the contact) had approached Obasanjo, but the source stated that “with the zeal and sense of urgency they have displayed, it won’t be out of place to think they might have approached those close to him.”
