People of North-West Senatorial
District, Akwa Ibom State, have said they will begin the process to
recall Senator Aloysius Etok from the National Assembly if he fails to
apologise for his “provocative utterances” against the state governor,
Mr. Godswill Akpabio.
At a stakeholders’ meeting at Ikot
Ekpene, headquarters of the zone, on Tuesday, traditional rulers,
politicians and government functionaries expressed disappointment with
the senator’s comments.
Etok had spoken on a radio programme, Akwa Ibom Today, where he said there was no vacancy in the senatorial seat in 2015, where he is seeking a re-election for a third time.
The Senator was quoted to have said the
governor was sending a hit squad after him to compel him to withdraw
from the race and accept the governor’s offer as campaign manager.
The motion to recall the senator was
moved by his kinsman, Mr. Iboro Ekamen, of Ekpom Ward 5 in Ikono Local
Government Area of the state.
Convener of the meeting and traditional
ruler of Annang Ethnic group, Chief Pius Eside, while explaining the
rationale for the meeting, said they had written to the Senator on April
20 to appear before them for reconciliation between him and the
governor, alleging that Etok refused to attend the scheduled meeting.
He said the stakeholders considered the
Senator’s refusal to attend as an insult, and therefore had no option
than to begin the recall process to serve as a deterrent to others.
“We convened the meeting to reconcile
him with the governor, Etok refused to attend. Maybe we did not matter
to him,” Eside said.
