CPC holds national convention on Saturday, decides merger

National Publicity Secretary of Congress for Progressive Change, Mr.
Rotimi Fashakin, has said the party has fixed Saturday May 11, for its
national convention in Abuja.
Fashakin told the News Agency of
Nigeria in Abuja on Monday that the convention, which would take place
at old parade ground in Abuja, would focus on ratifying the CPC’s merger
with other political parties of like minds.
The national
convention is the highest decision making body of the party. According
to him, there are three reasons under the Nigerian law that can inform
the holding of the convention.
He said the party could hold a
national convention if it wanted to elect national officials or to elect
candidate, who fly the party’s flag for national elections.
Accordingly, the party can hold a national convention when the party
wants to approve a major decision such as the proposed merger of the
party with other political parties, he said.
“Merging with
another political party is a very major decision and the nation’s law
has made it imperative that a political party must go to the convention
to ratify it,” he said.
Fashakin said the Action Congress of
Nigeria had fulfilled all necessary processes as it was able to do its
national convention ahead of CPC.
He described the ACN national
convention as a huge success, adding that there were resolutions at the
convention that would be sent to INEC that would enhance the
registration of All Progressives Congress.
Fashakin said the
party had intensified efforts in encouraging peaceful coexistence and
internal democracy among its members to ensure the success of the
convention.
In a related development, the Chairman of CPC
Merger Committee, Mr. Garba Gadi, has urged Nigerians to believe in the
ideologies of APC in order to establish true participatory democracy in
Nigeria.
According to him, APC government will ensure judicious use of the resources of the state for the benefit of every Nigerian.
Gadi expressed optimism that APC would offer Nigerians good governance
that would bring an end to insecurity, poverty, economic downturn, and
general unpleasant situations being experienced in the country now.
“We should all be ready to make sacrifice to uplift this nation,” he said.
