Lawmaker representing Lagos Central
Senatorial District, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has described Nigeria as a
nation at war due to the rate of unemployment in the country.
She added that those in privileged positions must create opportunities for the youth to earn income.
Tinubu, who was a Special Guest, spoke
on Saturday during a programme to boost small scale businesses and
alleviate poverty in Ikeja Constituency II.
The programme, the sixth in the
series, was organised by the member of the Lagos State House of
Assembly, Lola Akande, at Ojodu Local Council Development Area
Secretariat.
Tinubu said, “Nigeria is a nation at war because of its army of unemployed youths that are despondent about their future.
“Initiatives, such as this, are germane to salvage Nigeria from the crises rocking its corporate existence.
“With initiatives of this nature, hopes can be rekindled among the masses and in our political system.”
Akande, who is the deputy Majority
Leader of the House, said the programme was born out of her passion to
uplift the people and eradicate poverty.
She said since her assumption of office
in 2007, she had distributed equipment such as hair dryers, sewing
machines, coolers, computers, generators, refrigerators, cookers as well
as cash to her constituents.
The annual programme witnessed the
distribution of cash prizes to support new businesses, cooperative
society and ward development.
Among the beneficiaries and recipients
of N20,000 each was a batch of trainees that had just acquired skills in
making of shampoo, hair cream, disinfectant, and paints.
Twenty one widows collected N20,000
each, while ward chairmen, 20 youths, two local government chairmen,
Action Congress of Nigeria women leaders also got cash gifts ranging
from N10,000 to N65,000.
Deputy Speaker of Lagos Assembly and
Chairman of the occasion, Taiwo Kolawole, further urged the
beneficiaries to make good use of the benefits to encourage their
elected representatives to do more.
