THE lingering crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may
consume its Alhaji Bamanga Tukur-led National Working Committee (NWC),
as the party holds it National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on
Thursday.
A competent source confirmed to the Nigerian Tribune on Monday night
in Abuja that at the NEC meeting fixed for Thursday, all the members of
the NWC were expected to turn in their letters of resignation for the
NEC to decide the next line of action.
According to the source, “this is part of the peace moves by the
stakeholders to rescue the party from total collapse, all the NWC
members have been duly briefed and had agreed to the terms placed on the
table.”
The source, however, clarified that the affected NWC members, as well
as the suspended national secretary of the party, Prince Olagunsoye
Oyinlola and the removed national auditor, Chief Bode Mustapha, were
free to re-contest along with other interested members from the various
zones.
It was gathered that the members of the NWC also met with a peace
committee on the crisis in the party, headed by the Secretary to the
Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim, at the party’s
presidential campaign office, Legacy House, Maitama, Abuja, for further
consultation.
This is coming just as anxiety prevailed at the national secretariat
of the party, Wadata Plaza, Wuse District, Abuja, on Monday, over the
fate of the NWC members.
Many of the members of staff were s aid to have been confused about
the real situation of things in the party when they learnt that the NWC
members had resolved to resign and that the much-touted NEC meeting
would hold on Thursday.
“We are confused, we had it as a rumour that the NWC are to resign on
or before Thursday. We also learn that they have decided to resign to
avoid being sacked by the NEC. We don’t even know what is happening
now,” a member of staff at the secretariat said.
In another development, strong indications emerged on Monday night
that some prominent members of the party in the South-West may not
attend peace meeting scheduled for Lagos.
It was gathered that the Lagos meeting did not follow due process and
was being designed to score cheap political points, while some
prominent members were shut out of the meeting deliberately.
Efforts to get the national publicity secretary of the party, Chief
Olisa Metuh, to speak on the matter failed, as he was said to have gone
for a crucial meeting when contacted.
Another member of the NWC, however, told the Nigerian Tribune in
confidence that “all is not well for now, but the party has to move
forward, come to NEC meeting on Thursday please.”
